A seven-month age-65 enrollment window

The planning rule uses three months before the eligibility-month anchor, the anchor month, and three months after. For a birthday on the first of a month, the anchor shifts to the previous month. This estimates the Initial Enrollment Period only; when coverage starts depends on when you enroll and your circumstances.

Example: a July 10, 1962 birthday gives April 1 through October 31, 2027. A July 1, 1962 birthday shifts the estimate to March 1 through September 30, 2027. February 29 birthdays use February as the birth month even when the age-65 year is not a leap year.

This tool excludes disability, ESRD and other eligibility paths. Automatic enrollment and delayed enrollment based on current-employment coverage need separate review. Use SSA’s official birthday tool to confirm your dates before acting.
