How to read an IRMAA bracket table

Why does the table have different filing-status columns?

Social Security uses the appropriate sliding-scale table for the determination. Read the full column heading; do not substitute a joint-filing column for an individual or married-filing-separately situation.

Which year should I look up?

Start with the premium year on your notice. The income year used is generally two years earlier. Mixing a current premium table with the wrong income year can create a misleading estimate even when the arithmetic is correct.

Does a higher bracket replace the regular premium?

The income-related adjustment is an additional amount. Use the official table and your notice to distinguish the standard premium, the adjustment and the combined amount. Do not add a combined amount to the standard premium again.

What if my income has changed?

Compare the notice with the official review instructions. A qualifying event or corrected tax information can call for a review, but changing a calculator input does not change the official determination. Preserve evidence and contact Social Security directly.
