Does Medicare Cover Weight-Loss Drugs (GLP-1s)?

Short answer up top, then the exact rule. Here's what Original Medicare does and doesn't cover for weight-loss drugs in 2026 — and where a Medicare Advantage plan can fill the gap.

Quick answer: Newly — and only if you qualify. Medicare's drug benefit has long been barred from covering drugs used only for weight loss. Starting July 1, 2026, a temporary GLP-1 Bridge program lets eligible people with Part D get certain GLP-1 drugs (Wegovy®, Zepbound®, Foundayo®) for a $50/month copay through December 31, 2027. Part B separately covers obesity screening and counseling.

Does Original Medicare cover weight-loss drugs?
New: $50/month through 2027 via the GLP-1 Bridge, if you qualify
Original Medicare rule · verify your plan at Medicare.gov
For years, Medicare's prescription drug benefit could not pay for drugs used only for weight loss — that's a statutory exclusion. A new, temporary program changes that for some people: beginning July 1, 2026, the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge covers Wegovy® (injection or tablet), Zepbound® (KwikPen® only), and Foundayo® (tablet) for a $50 copayment per one-month supply. To qualify you must have Part D drug coverage (standalone or through a Medicare health plan), have a BMI of 35 or higheror a BMI of 30–34.99 plus diastolic heart failure or uncontrolled high blood pressure — and not have type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease (those conditions get GLP-1s through the normal Part D channel instead). Your provider must certify you're using the drug as part of a diet-and-exercise lifestyle program. A prior authorization is valid through December 31, 2027. Note the $50 copay doesn't count toward your Part D deductible or out-of-pocket limit, can't be lowered by Extra Help, and can't be spread out under the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan. Separately, Part B covers obesity screening and behavioral counseling from a primary care provider at no cost.

Medicare Advantage: what some plans add

The GLP-1 Bridge runs through your Part D drug coverage — whether that's a standalone drug plan or the drug coverage built into a Medicare Advantage plan — so the same eligibility rules and $50 copay apply. Confirm your specific plan participates and check its formulary and any step-therapy rules.

Who this matters to

People asking whether Medicare will pay for Wegovy, Zepbound, or similar GLP-1s for weight loss. The short version: not through standard drug coverage, but a temporary 2026–2027 bridge covers it at $50/month for people who meet strict BMI and health criteria and don't already qualify for a GLP-1 through another diagnosis. Verify the rules — this program is time-limited.

Frequently asked questions

Does Medicare cover Wegovy or Zepbound for weight loss?

Only through the temporary GLP-1 Bridge program that starts July 1, 2026. If you have Part D and meet the BMI and health criteria, you can get Wegovy, Zepbound (KwikPen), or Foundayo for a $50 monthly copay through December 31, 2027. Outside that program, drugs used only for weight loss aren't covered by Medicare's drug benefit.

Who qualifies for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge?

You need Part D drug coverage and a BMI of 35+ (or 30–34.99 with diastolic heart failure or uncontrolled high blood pressure), and you must not have type 2 diabetes, moderate-to-severe sleep apnea, or fatty liver disease — those get GLP-1s through normal Part D coverage. Your provider must certify you're using it alongside a diet-and-exercise program.
