Does Medicare Cover Acupuncture?

Short answer up top, then the exact rule. Here's what Original Medicare does and doesn't cover for acupuncture in 2026 — and where a Medicare Advantage plan can fill the gap.

Quick answer: Only for chronic low back pain. Part B covers up to 12 acupuncture visits in 90 days, plus 8 more if you're improving — a maximum of 20 treatments in a 12-month period. After the deductible you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount. Acupuncture for any other condition is not covered.

Does Original Medicare cover acupuncture?
Yes — for chronic low back pain only
Original Medicare rule · verify your plan at Medicare.gov
Since 2020, Part B covers acupuncture only for chronic low back pain (pain lasting 12 weeks or longer with no other identifiable cause). Medicare covers up to 12 visits in 90 days; if you show improvement, it covers 8 additional sessions, for a maximum of 20 treatments in 12 months. If you aren't improving, further visits aren't covered and you pay 100%. After the Part B deductible you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount, and the acupuncture must be furnished by (or under the supervision of) a qualified provider such as a physician, nurse practitioner, or physician assistant — Medicare can't pay licensed acupuncturists directly.

Medicare Advantage: what some plans add

Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans cover at least the same chronic-low-back-pain acupuncture as Original Medicare, and some plans offer additional acupuncture as a supplemental benefit. Check the specific plan for any broader acupuncture coverage.

Who this matters to

People considering acupuncture for lasting low back pain. For any other use — headaches, knee pain, general wellness — Original Medicare won't pay, so a Medicare Advantage plan with an acupuncture benefit or out-of-pocket payment are the options.
